Firewind - Allegiance

Από το παρθενικό Nocturnal Symphony (1998)  μέχρι και το Allegiance το 2006 άλλαξαν πολλά στους Firewind τόσο από πλευράς στυλ όσο και σε σύνθεση. Το μόνο που έμεινε σταθερό ειναι ο ηγέτης και δημιουργός της μπάντας Gus. G και τα αξιοπρόσεκτα του riffs. Όχι οτι τα κομμάτια του Between Heaven and Hell (2002) έχαναν σε ενέργεια (βλέπε ''Warrior'', ''Destination Forever''), ούτε οτι το Burning Earth (2003) έχανε σε δυναμισμό (βλέπε ''I am the Anger'', ''The Fire and the Fury'') αλλα κάτι έλειπε για να ανεβάσει την μπάντα σε ένα άλλο επίπεδο. Αυτο το στοιχείο ήταν η μελωδικότητα, κάτι που έγινε ιδιαίτερα αντιληπτό στο Allegiance. Ένας από τους κύριους λόγους ήταν η μεγάλη συνεισφορά του Bob Katsionis (πλήκτρα) στην μουσική της μπάντας, αφού ήρθε στο προσκήνιο μετα την μηδαμινή του παρουσία στο Forged By Fire (2005). 

Το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ σηματοδοτεί το ντεμπούτο του Apollo Papathanasio στα φωνητικά και του Mark Cross στα τύμπανα. Ο Apollo δέχθηκε αυστηρή κριτική κυρίως για τα τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά του και πολλοί ίσως να απόρρησαν με αυτη την επιλογή του Gus. Μπορει να μην εχει το εύρος της φωνής του Stephen Fredrick αλλα πιστεύω οτι έφερε μια δυναμική και μια καινούργια προσέγγιση στο συγκρότημα (''Insanity'', ''Ready To Strike''), γι'αυτο εξάλλου συνεχίζει να ειναι και ο τραγουδιστής. Επίσης συμμετέχει ενεργά στους στοίχους σχεδόν όλων των τραγουδιών κάτι που ήταν πάντα η αρμοδιότητα του Gus. Από την αλλη, ο Cross ξεχωρίζει σε αρκετά σημεία λόγω του εκρηκτικού του παιξίματος (''Allegiance'', ''Till The End of Time'', ''Dreamchaser'') αλλα δεν άντεξε να καθιερωθεί στην μετέπειτα ιστορία της μπάντας.

Από τον συγκεκριμένο δίσκο ξεχωρίζω ιδιαίτερα το εναρκτήριο ''Allegiance'' με το Gus να παραδίδει ένα καταιγιστικό riffing που θυμίζει προηγούμενες του συνθέσεις, το απλοϊκό (σε στοίχους και εκτέλεση) αλλα ταυτόχρονα μελωδικό ''Falling To Pieces'', το κάπως ελαφρύ (σε σχέση με τον όλο δίσκο) αλλα συνάμα ενδιαφέρον ''Breaking the Silence'' με την δυναμική παρουσία της Tara Teresa και το σόλο στα πλήκτρα που θυμίζει έντονα τον Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) και το mid-tempo ''The Essence'' που έχει μια διαφορετική προσέγγιση και ίσως από τους καλύτερους στοίχους του άλμπουμ. Στα συν πρεπει να τονήσω και την πολύ σπουδαία δουλειά που έγινε στην παραγωγή και το μιξάρισμα του δίσκου που βοηθούν το συγκρότημα να ακούγεται πιο ώριμο και συμπαγές.
 
Γενικά πιστεύω ειναι μια πολύ καλή δουλειά με ομοιόμορφες αλλαγες στο τέμπο μεταξύ των τραγουδιών. Μπορεί οι στοίχοι να ειναι στην πλειοψηφία των τραγουδιών απλοί και χωρίς πολλη πρωτοτυπία αλλα εντούτοις περιέχουν αρκετό συναίσθημα, χωρίς να γινονται δραματικοί. Ειναι ίσως ενα από τα μοναδικά συγκροτήματα στον χώρο της power metal που σιγουρα προσέγγισαν ενα πιο ευρύ κοινό κυρίως με κάποια radio friendly τραγούδια τους όπως για παράδειγμα το ''Falling to Pieces'' και το ''Breaking the Silence'', χωρίς όμως να χαλάσουν την εικόνα τους και να δημιουργήσουν έτσι ένα πολυπρόσωπο ύφος.

From their inaugural Nocturnal Symphony (1998) and until Allegiance in 2006, Firewind changed a lot in terms of composition and style. The only thing that remained constant is the leader and shredd-master Gus G. and his remarkable riffs. Not that songs in Between Heaven and Hell (2002) lacked of energy (see ''Warrior'', ''Destination Forever'') or Burning Earth's (2003) had less power (see ''I am the Anger'', ''The Fire and the Fury''), but it was obvious that something was missing in order for the band to step on a higher level. That element was melodiousness, and it is very perceivable in Allegiance. One of the main reasons for that to happen was the big contribution in regards to the music from Bob Katsionis (keyboards), since he came to the foreground after being almost 'invisible' in Forged By Fire (2005).

The specific album marks the debut of Apollo Papathanasio on vocals and Mark Cross on drums. Apollo underwent a lot of criticism about his vocal capabilities and many might have been surprised about this choice from Gus. He may not have the aggressive voice of Stephen Fredrick but in my opinion he brought a new dynamic approach into the band (''Insanity'', ''Ready To Strike'') and for that reason he is still the singer. In addition, he participates and contributes lyrically, a job previously done solely by Gus. On the other hand, Cross stands out in many parts due to his eruptive drum play (''Allegiance'', ''Till the End of Time'', ''Dreamchaser'') however he did not manage to convince and thus departed a couple of years later.


From the specific album I especially distinguish ''Allegiance'' with the boisterous guitar riff reminding me of the band's older songs, the simplistic (in terms of lyrics and execution) but catchy and melodic ''Falling to Pieces'', the somehow 'lighter' (in respect to the overall album) but nonetheless interesting ''Breaking the Silence'' with Tara Teresa sharing the vocals with Apollo and the keyboard solo reminding the likes of Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) and finally the mid-tempo ''The Essence'' which has a different approach and some of the best lyrics on the album. I would also give a thumbs up for the great work made in regards to the production and mixing of the album, characteristics that helped the band appear more mature and solid.  

All in all, the album has uniformity and solidness. Lyrics in their majority are simple and far from originality however, they contain a lot of emotion without being dramatic. In addition, the band showed diversity because of the fact that they dared to approach a wider audience with some radio friendly songs such as ''Falling To Pieces'' and ''Breaking The Silence'' without losing their image.
