Sentenced - The Funeral Album (2006)

Μου ειναι πραγματικά δύσκολο να πω αν αυτος ο δίσκος ειναι ο καλύτερος των Φινλανδών ή οχι. Από την μια ειναι ένας άρτια δουλεμένος δίσκος τόσο σε παραγωγή όσο και μουσική, με πολλη μελωδικότητα και το στοιχείο της λύπης και της μελαγχολίας να δεσπόζει όπως μας έχει συνηθίσει η μπάντα. Από την άλλη δεν προσφέρει κάτι το καινοτόμο από πλευράς ήχου αλλα ούτε και το τοπ τραγούδι όπως σε προηγούμενες δουλειές. Αν κάνει κάποιος μια αναδρομή από το Down και μετά αντιλαμβάνεται οτι η μπάντα κρατούσε από κάθε άλμπουμ τα στοιχεία που την έκαναν ''δυνατή'' και τα χρησιμοποιούσε στην επόμενη της δουλειά. Έτσι φτάσαμε στο αποτέλεσμα που ακούει στο όνομα The Funeral Album, την τελευταία δισκογραφική δουλειά της μπάντας που δήλωσε οτι θα ειναι και η τελευταία της. Ειναι πιστευω η πιο συμπαγές δουλειά και το καλύτερο κλείσιμο σε αυτη την δεκαπεντάχρονη τους καριέρα.

Προσωπικά δεν ξεχωρίζω ιδιαίτερα κάποιο κομμάτι. Ειναι από τους δίσκους που μπαίνουν στο player και δεν βγαινουν αν δεν τελειώσει. Το καταιγιστικό ''May Today Become the Day'' κάνει την εισαγωγή στον δίσκο ακολουθούμενο από το ''Ever-Frost'' που ακολουθεί στις ίδιες ταχύτητες με την ίδια μελωδικότητα. Στο ''We are but Falling Leaves'' και το ''Her Last 5 Minutes'' το τέμπο πέφτει για να δημιουργηθεί ένα αίσθημα θλίψης και δίνεται περισσότερη έμφαση στους στοίχους οι οποίοι αντικατοπτρίζουν την γενική εικόνα του δίσκου. Το ''Where Waters Fall Frozen'' ειναι ένα instrumental μεταβατικό τραγούδι το οποίο παραπέμπει στις πρώιμες death metal εποχές και δεν κολλάει καθόλου στο σύνολο. Παρά το γεγονος όμως και λόγω των 58 δευτερολέπτων του σε διάρκεια δεν ξινίζει τον ακροατή. 

Το ''Despair-Ridden Hearts'' ξεκινά από ένα αργό τέμπο και στην συνέχεια αναπτύσσει ταχύτητες χαρίζοντας μας ένα πολύ όμορφο και περίτεχνο σόλο της κιθάρας. Το ''Vengeance is Mine'' νομίζω ειναι από τα καλύτερα τραγούδια του δίσκου αφού συνδυάζει όμορφα riffs και δημιουργεί ένα αίσθημα θυμού μέσα από τους στοίχους με ένα πιασάρικο ρεφραίν που σου μένει. Ακριβώς τα ίδια χαρακτηριστικά έχει και το ''Long Way To Nowhere'' το οποίο όμως συνδυάζεται και με ένα κομψό σόλο στην κιθάρα. Καθώς ο δίσκος μπήκε στο δεύτερο του μισό δίνει την εντύπωση οτι κοντεύει προς το τέλος. Αρχή γινεται με το ''Consider us Dead'' ενώ το ''Lower the Flags'' με το εισαγωγικό του σόλο στο πιάνο σε παρασύρει σε αποχαιρετιστήριες εικόνες που δεν θα αργήσουν να γίνουν πραγματικότητα. Με αυτο τον τρόπο το μονοπάτι που χάραξαν μέσα από το άλμπουμ θα φτάσει στο τέλος του με το μεγαλεπήβολο ''End of the Road'' το οποίο σε συλλογικό επίπεδο πιστεύω ειναι από τα καλύτερα κομμάτια που έγραψε ποτέ η μπάντα. Πραγματικά υπέροχη εκτέλεση από τον Laihiala στα φωνητικά και άψογη ροή στο τραγούδι που ειναι το καταλληλότερο για να βάλει την ταφόπλακα στο συγκρότημα εν ενώματι Sentenced.

I find it extremely difficult to say if this is the best album of the Finnish or not. On one hand it is a well-worked album not only musically but also in production, with lots of melody and with the element of sorrow and depression to predominate the scene. On the other hand, its not something new in terms of sound and does not have top songs as in previous releases. A flashback from Down in 1996 and onwards will make you realise that the band kept only the good characteristics each time and use them on the subsequent album, thus creating the sound in The Funeral Album. Maybe it was not the best album that the band made, however I think it was the most solid and complete one and the most suitable one to close their fifteen-year career.

It is difficult to distinguish any songs. It is one of these albums that you put into the player and it does not come out until it's over. The initiation is being made with the boisterous ''May Today Become the Day'' and it's followed by the same melodic and fast-paced ''Ever-Frost''. Tempo is slowed down on ''We are but Falling Leaves'' and ''Her Last 5 Minutes'' in order to shift the emphasis to the lyrics and set a more dramatic atmosphere which is depicted on the album as a whole. ''Where Waters Fall Frozen'' is an instrumental transitional song which reminds the band's earlier death metal years. Although it does not fit to the image of the album, it is very short to disturb the listener.

''Despair-Ridden Hearts'' starts at a slow tempo song and builds up as the minutes go by, offering us a neat and elegant guitar solo. One of my personal favourites, ''Vengeance is Mine'' combines nice riffs and along with its catchy chorus manages to pass me the emotion of anger. Similar characteristics can be found in ''Long Way To Nowhere'' which combines a sharp guitar solo. As the album passed it's mid-point it is evident that it will soon come to an end. ''Consider us Dead'' takes you on an emotional ride whereas ''Lower the Flags'' another personal favourite has a great piano melody which somehow makes me realise that the journey's end is very close. After the interlude ''Karu'', ''End of the Road'' signifies the end. This is a magnificent song and I believe is one of the best that the band has ever written. Excellent vocals by Laihiala and a perfect flow in a song which couldn't be more suitable to put the gravestone on the band named Sentenced.
