Iron Fire - Blade of Triumph (2007)

Genre: Power Metal

Αληθινό, αγνό, συμπαγές metal με πιασάρικα riffs και μελωδίες που θυμίζουν Hammerfall, Dream Evil και Rhapsody of Fire.

1. Dragonheart (5:47)
2. Bloodbath of Knights (4:22)
3. Dawn of Victory (4:51)
4. Lord of the Labyrinth (4:22)
5. Bridges Will Burn (4:37)
6. Follow the Sign (4:36)
7. Steel Invaders (4:31)
8. Jackal's Eye (5:35)
9. Legend of the Magic Sword (4:27)
10. Gladiator's Path (4:11)
11. Blade of Triumph (7:25)

When a band goes through a storm of changes in it's formation, there is always the possibility that an album will contain the optimal chemistry of musicians. Indeed, this is what happened in the case of the Danish metalers upon releasing their fourth album Blade of Triumph. Anyone who expects to hear something innovative or different than the usual will be disappointed. They do not want to impress but instead they want to give the listener a taste of their sound and they achieve this with a simple strategy. They choose not to focus only on just 2-3 singles that would draw attention (and inevitably include many fillers) but rather presenting a series of good songs.

Pure, solid, true metal with catchy riffs and melodies which remind the likes of Hammerfall, Dream Evil and Rhapsody of Fire. Martin Steene's vocals are not reaching the skies but follow a prudent formula when it comes to sing. He is on the same levels as the rest of the band (although I believe he has many potentials) and does not draw the attention to his person, thus creating a strong group. Lyrics concentrate mainly on epic aspects and tell stories about dragons, knights, gladiators, with the sword element never leaving from the foreground. These characteristics create a consistency throughout the whole album, helping it not to have any weak or dull moments.

In regards to the songs, any of them can be liked equally with the others. Personal favorite moments are the explosive ''Dragonheart'', the hammering ''Bloodbath of Knights'' and the boisterous ''Steel Invaders''. An absolute must for the lovers of epic metal.

Firewind - Allegiance

Genre: Power Metal

Όχι οτι τα κομμάτια του Between Heaven and Hell (2002) έχαναν σε ενέργεια (βλέπε ''Warrior'', ''Destination Forever''), ούτε οτι το Burning Earth (2003) έχανε σε δυναμισμό (βλέπε ''I am the Anger'', ''The Fire and the Fury'') αλλα κάτι έλειπε για να ανεβάσει την μπάντα σε ένα άλλο επίπεδο.

Από την αλλη, ο Cross ξεχωρίζει σε αρκετά σημεία λόγω του εκρηκτικού του παιξίματος (''Allegiance'', ''Till The End of Time'', ''Dreamchaser'') αλλα δεν άντεξε να καθιερωθεί στην μετέπειτα ιστορία της μπάντας.

Από τον συγκεκριμένο δίσκο ξεχωρίζω ιδιαίτερα το εναρκτήριο ''Allegiance'' με το Gus να παραδίδει ένα καταιγιστικό riffing που θυμίζει προηγούμενες του συνθέσεις, το απλοϊκό (σε στοίχους και εκτέλεση) αλλα ταυτόχρονα μελωδικό ''Falling To Pieces'', το κάπως ελαφρύ (σε σχέση με τον όλο δίσκο) αλλα συνάμα ενδιαφέρον ''Breaking the Silence'' με την δυναμική παρουσία της Tara Teresa και το σόλο στα πλήκτρα που θυμίζει έντονα τον Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) και το mid-tempo ''The Essence'' που έχει μια διαφορετική προσέγγιση και ίσως από τους καλύτερους στοίχους του άλμπουμ.

1. Allegiance (3:41)
2. Insanity (4:29)
3. Falling To Pieces (4:03)
4. Ready To Strike (4:35)
5. Breaking The Silence (4:03)
6. Deliverance (6:07)
7. Till The End Of Time (4:36)
8. Dreamchaser (4:07)
9. Before The Storm (3:42)
10. The Essence (4:19)
11. Where Do We Go From Here (3:57)

From their inaugural Nocturnal Symphony (1998) and until Allegiance in 2006, Firewind changed a lot in terms of composition and style. The only thing that remained constant is the leader and shredd-master Gus G. and his remarkable riffs. Not that songs in Between Heaven and Hell (2002) lacked of energy (see ''Warrior'', ''Destination Forever'') or Burning Earth's (2003) had less power (see ''I am the Anger'', ''The Fire and the Fury''), but it was obvious that something was missing in order for the band to step on a higher level. That element was melodiousness, and it is very perceivable in Allegiance. One of the main reasons for that to happen was the big contribution in regards to the music from Bob Katsionis (keyboards), since he came to the foreground after being almost 'invisible' in Forged By Fire (2005).

The specific album marks the debut of Apollo Papathanasio on vocals and Mark Cross on drums. Apollo underwent a lot of criticism about his vocal capabilities and many might have been surprised about this choice from Gus. He may not have the aggressive voice of Stephen Fredrick but in my opinion he brought a new dynamic approach into the band (''Insanity'', ''Ready To Strike'') and for that reason he is still the singer. In addition, he participates and contributes lyrically, a job previously done solely by Gus. On the other hand, Cross stands out in many parts due to his eruptive drum play (''Allegiance'', ''Till the End of Time'', ''Dreamchaser'') however he did not manage to convince and thus departed a couple of years later.

From the specific album I especially distinguish ''Allegiance'' with the boisterous guitar riff reminding me of the band's older songs, the simplistic (in terms of lyrics and execution) but catchy and melodic ''Falling to Pieces'', the somehow 'lighter' (in respect to the overall album) but nonetheless interesting ''Breaking the Silence'' with Tara Teresa sharing the vocals with Apollo and the keyboard solo reminding the likes of Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) and finally the mid-tempo ''The Essence'' which has a different approach and some of the best lyrics on the album. I would also give a thumbs up for the great work made in regards to the production and mixing of the album, characteristics that helped the band appear more mature and solid.

All in all, the album has uniformity and solidness. Lyrics in their majority are simple and far from originality however, they contain a lot of emotion without being dramatic. In addition, the band showed diversity because of the fact that they dared to approach a wider audience with some radio friendly songs such as ''Falling To Pieces'' and ''Breaking The Silence'' without losing their image.

Altaria - The Fallen Empire (2006)

Genre: Melodic Power Metal

1. Disciples (6:12)
2. Valley Of Rainbows (4:21)
3. Abyss of Twilight (4:55)
4. Frozen Hearts (4:39)
5. Crucifix (3:27)
6. Showdown (3:38)
7. The Lion (4:57)
8. Outlaw Blood (4:12)
9. Chosen One (4:11)
10. Access Denied (5:20)

This third album of the Finnish band came to follow the path of Divinity and Invitation. An album that shows the band's maturity from those two previous pieces, since it includes their best elements. I believe the simplicity behind each track is the thing that makes them differentiate from other look-alike bands like Sonata Arctica and Rhapsody, mainly because of the absence of fast-paced drumming. Another characteristic is the mixture of melody and lyricism which the band managed to achieve, a combination which was a bit absent from the previous albums.

The album starts with the best of omens since the first four tracks distinguish themselves from the rest. The simplistic and (at the same time) powerful head-banging ''Disciples'' is succeeded by ''Valley of Rainbows'' a song which starts with a catchy refrain and includes an elegant guitar solo. The ''Abyss of Twilight'' is a mid-to-fast tempo rock song and shows that double-bass kicking is not always needed for a powerful song to be nice, while ''Frozen Hearts'' is even more simple having quarter note drum beats and some well-written lyrics. From the rest of the album I would point out ''The Lion'' and ''Outlaw Blood'' and to a lesser degree ''Access Denied''.
In respect of technique the album does not say much, however its very balanced. An enjoyable album from an average-to-good band that I doubt it will enthuse many.
