High Spirits - Another Night (2011)

Genre: Traditional Metal

Ο δίσκος κάνει εισαγωγή με το ''Another Night in the City'' το οποίο με το ζωηρό του riff και ένα πιασάρικο ρεφραίν θέτει αμέσως το σκηνικό και παρουσιάζει την φόρμουλα της μπάντας. Ακολουθεί το ''Do You Remember'' που ανοίγει με ένα riffing που φέρνει έντονα στον νου George Lynch και Rudolf Schenker και ειναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου στον δίσκο. Το ''Full Power'' έχει σαφώς ανεβασμένο τέμπο και μια ξεχωριστή δυναμική, ενώ το ''Demons at the Door'' ξεφεύγει από την εικόνα των Dokken και Scorpions (που ίσως έχει δημιουργηθεί) και μπαίνει σε αλλα μονοπάτια.

1. Another Night in the City (3:01)
2. Do You Remember (3:57)
3. Full of Power (3:56)
4. Demons at the Door (4:20)
5. I'll Be Back (3:05)
6. You Make Love Impossible (4:28)
7. Where Did I Go Wrong (3:31)
8. Nights in Black (4:41)
9. Going Up (3:36)

I never thought that in the current decade there would be a band that could so perfectly demonstrate the heavy metal and hard rock picture of the 80s. Just like in their demos, the band pulls out a sound explicitly influenced and inspired by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement and so easily travels you twenty years and so back in time. Parallel to the music, the voice of Chris Black (Pharaoh, Dawnbringer) binds perfectly, creating this way an old-school album full of energy and nostalgic vibes. It is worth mentioning that Chris is the main figure responsible for almost everything you are going to hear. With simplicity as the main characteristic, the result is truly amazing.

A worth noting fact is that the musicians choose to present their selves only with their names and not with any other fact that would reveal their identities (they appear as Chris, Mike, Scott, Bob and Ian). A plausible reason of this choice is that they try to attract the listener with their music and not with their names. Risky but successful.

The album starts with ''Another Night in the City'' and with it's vigorous riff and its catchy refrain sets the scene and presents the formula straight out. It's on these grounds that the rest of the album will move. ''Do You Remember'' follows and opens with a sharp George Lynch/Rudolf Schenker-style riff and it's one of my favourites. ''Full Power'' has a notable up-beat tempo and some special dynamics, while ''Demons at the Door'' gets away from the Dokken/Scorpions image (that may have been created until that moment) and enters a different path. You should also notice ''Nights in Black'' which has an attractive and groovy bass line which I'm sure will seduce many.

Overall, it's a solid album with uniformity and character, sweet melodies, fresh vocals and energetic music making it irresistible. The only bad thing is the fact that the length of it is somewhere around 35 minutes only. Recommended for Dokken, Scorpions, Y&T and Saxon fans.

Sentenced - The Funeral Album (2006)

Genre: Melodic Gothic/Death Metal

Το καταιγιστικό ''May Today Become the Day'' κάνει την εισαγωγή στον δίσκο ακολουθούμενο από το ''Ever-Frost'' που ακολουθεί στις ίδιες ταχύτητες με την ίδια μελωδικότητα. Στο ''We are but Falling Leaves'' και το ''Her Last 5 Minutes'' το τέμπο πέφτει για να δημιουργηθεί ένα αίσθημα θλίψης και δίνεται περισσότερη έμφαση στους στοίχους οι οποίοι αντικατοπτρίζουν την γενική εικόνα του δίσκου.

Ακριβώς τα ίδια χαρακτηριστικά έχει και το ''Long Way To Nowhere'' το οποίο όμως συνδυάζεται και με ένα κομψό σόλο στην κιθάρα. Αρχή γινεται με το ''Consider us Dead'' ενώ το ''Lower the Flags'' με το εισαγωγικό του σόλο στο πιάνο σε παρασύρει σε αποχαιρετιστήριες εικόνες που δεν θα αργήσουν να γίνουν πραγματικότητα.

1. May Today Become the Day (4:00)
2. Ever-Frost (4:18)
3. We Are But Falling Leaves (4:28)
4. Her Last 5 Minutes (5:40)
5. Where Waters Fall Frozen (0:58)
6. Despair-Ridden Hearts (3:40)
7. Vengeance is Mine (4:15)
8. A Long Way To Nowhere (3:26)
9. Consider Us Dead (4:51)
10. Lower the Flags (3:34)
11. Drain Me (4:33)
12. Karu (1:03)
13. End of the Road (5:00)

I find it extremely difficult to say if this is the best album of the Finnish or not. On one hand it is a well-worked album not only musically but also in production, with lots of melody and with the element of sorrow and depression to predominate the scene. On the other hand, its not something new in terms of sound and does not have top songs as in previous releases. A flashback from Down in 1996 and onwards will make you realise that the band kept only the good characteristics each time and use them on the subsequent album, thus creating the sound in The Funeral Album. Maybe it was not the best album that the band made, however I think it was the most solid and complete one and the most suitable one to close their fifteen-year career.

It is difficult to distinguish any songs. It is one of these albums that you put into the player and it does not come out until it's over. The initiation is being made with the boisterous ''May Today Become the Day'' and it's followed by the same melodic and fast-paced ''Ever-Frost''. Tempo is slowed down on ''We are but Falling Leaves'' and ''Her Last 5 Minutes'' in order to shift the emphasis to the lyrics and set a more dramatic atmosphere which is depicted on the album as a whole. ''Where Waters Fall Frozen'' is an instrumental transitional song which reminds the band's earlier death metal years. Although it does not fit to the image of the album, it is very short to disturb the listener.

''Despair-Ridden Hearts'' starts at a slow tempo song and builds up as the minutes go by, offering us a neat and elegant guitar solo. One of my personal favourites, ''Vengeance is Mine'' combines nice riffs and along with its catchy chorus manages to pass me the emotion of anger. Similar characteristics can be found in ''Long Way To Nowhere'' which combines a sharp guitar solo. As the album passed it's mid-point it is evident that it will soon come to an end. ''Consider us Dead'' takes you on an emotional ride whereas ''Lower the Flags'' another personal favourite has a great piano melody which somehow makes me realise that the journey's end is very close. After the interlude ''Karu'', ''End of the Road'' signifies the end. This is a magnificent song and I believe is one of the best that the band has ever written. Excellent vocals by Laihiala and a perfect flow in a song which couldn't be more suitable to put the gravestone on the band named Sentenced.

For My Pain - Fallen (2003)

Genre: Gothic Metal

Ευτυχώς δεν αποτελεί εξαίρεση ούτε στην περίπτωση των For My Pain..., ενός σούπερ-γκρουπ με gothic στοιχεία στον ήχο του που θυμίζει Charon, Sentenced καθώς και παλιές εποχές HIM.

Σαν τραγούδια ξεχώρισα ιδιαίτερα το απεγνωσμένο ''My Wound is Deeper than Yours'', την 'αρχοντική' απαισιοδοξία του ''Queen Misery'', την απελπισία του ''Rapture of the Lust'' με το πιασάρικο ρεφραίν, την αρμονική μελωδικότητα του ''Broken Days'' με την υπογραφή του Tuomas Holopainen στα πλήκτρα και τέλος το μελαγχολικό ''Autumn Harmony'' με το επιβλητικό του riff και το όμορφο του σόλο στην κιθάρα.

1.  My Wound is Deeper than Yours (3:43)
2. Dancer in the Dark (3:44)
3. Queen Misery (5:22)
4. Sea of Emotions (3:55)
5. Rapture of the Lust (3:54)
6. Broken Days (4:01)
7. Dear Carniwhore  (3:54)
8. Bed of Dead Leaves (5:00)
9. Autumn Harmony (4:45)
10. Tomorrow is a Closed Gate (4:49)

Regarding the metal scene, Finland is a country which usually delivers great bands. Thankfully, it is not an exception even in the case of For My Pain.., a super-group with gothic characteristics in its sound which reminds a lot the likes of Charon, Sentenced as well as HIM's early days. The band is comprised by members of Nightwish, Embraze, Eternal Fears of Sorrow and Reflexion, thus people who are familiar with the aforementioned bands realise that this has some quality. In regards to the production, it seems that a very good job has been done and in addition I believe that the band managed to depict the emotion they wanted in the album. The atmosphere that is created may not be the most gloomiest one, however, the dominate aura is that of melancholy, misery and depression.

Regarding the songs I specifically distinguished the desperate ''My Wound is Deeper than Yours'', the majestic pessimism of ''Queen Misery'', the hopelessness in ''Rapture of the Lust'' with the catchy chorus, the harmonic melodiousness of ''Broken Days'' with Holopainen's signature in keyboards and lastly the melancholic ''Autumn Harmony'' with the heavy riff and neat guitar solo. I don't think there are bad songs on the album and easily someone might have different opinions than me.

Overall, is a very melodic volume with a balance since there was not given any particular attention to specific instruments. Lengthy solo's are absent from guitars and keyboards and this can be clearly identified. I believe that a good choice has been made in terms of the tracks ordering, since the tempo is not kept constantly at high levels but rather fluctuates regularly keeping a nice flow. On the weaknesses side, I would mention the fact that Fallen does not present something innovative in it's total and the lyrics could have been worked out better as well. However, these negatives are not so important in order to drive the quality down.
